On the 28^th September 2004, 20 years ago this month, we lost our much-loved colleague, Dave Willis, to a secondary cancer with an unknown primary.  At the time of his diagnosis, he told us it was a hell of a way to get out of Winery Walkabout.

Dave always had a way to make us smile and 20 years on, we still use some of his jokes and reminisce with customers about how funny he was.  Dave loved his kids, his family and his beloved Western Bulldogs.  In the 20 years since his passing his three children have grown into wonderful young adults, his beautiful Mum has passed away and his beloved Bulldogs have taken out a much cherished premiership.  Dave missed it all.

Like Dave and so many of those we have loved and lost through cancer, their lives have been cut short and we, left behind, have been robbed of so many precious times and years together.  That’s why organisations like the GI Cancer Institute, who support clinical trials for patients to improve cure rates and chances of surviving, as well as improving quality of life during treatment, is so vital.  They, like us, want everyone we love, that is diagnosed with cancer, to live well and live longer.

For those of you who are new to our Crazy Dave sale, every year, in September, we hold a wine sale to honour Dave’s memory and to raise money to fight this insidious disease.  A portion of each pack is donated to a particular Cancer organisation and we have done this for the past 20 years.  For the last four years, we have been donating $6 from every pack to the GI Cancer Institute in Sydney.

Gastro-Intestinal (GI) cancer affects the digestive organs: oesophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder and biliary tract, pancreas, large and small bowel, rectum and anus.  GI cancer is the most common form of cancer, affecting both men and women.  Every year, a projected 36,929 Australians are diagnosed with it; every day, an estimated 51 Australians die from it.

The clinical trials research that the GI Cancer Institute conduct, allows researchers and health professionals to determine whether new treatments are safe and more effective than current treatments.
