88/100 Halliday Wine Companion 2026
“A super ripe, plush Merlot bolstered by some high alcohol and delivering an unusual level of boldness. That said, it is also mighty tasty. Combines a beetroot, leafy earthiness with black fruits and spice. Balloons out on the middle palate before being reined in by gravelly tannins. Finishes dry.

88/100 The Real Review 2025
“Aromas of stewed plum, mulberry, earth, cola, spice and bramble. Straightforward, juicy and plump in flavour. Plum, mulberry and choc mint flavours are all at play. Firm and structured on the finish”.

Harvest Date

March and April 2023

The 2023 growing season was one of the most challenging of the last decade, above average winter and well above average spring rainfall falling. The well-publicised flooding through the Murray River system saw the river peak at Corowa at 8.07m on November 15th, causing severe flood damage to our Sunday Creek vineyard, and minor flood damage to our Carlyle vineyard. We lost access to the Sunday Creek vineyard from the 27th October to the 9th December, being unable to drive any vehicles or spray the vineyard during this critical time. Parts of the vineyard were completely underwater for weeks, with the vines dropping their leaves and fruit completely. Yields have been impacted accordingly, with certain blocks being 80-90% down, and other blocks 30-40% down.

The rain continued throughout December and January, until we finally received some respite from it, with no rain falling at all in February, just in the knick of time for the onset of harvest. Harvest started on the 1st March, with Rutherglen Chardonnay grapes, around 3 weeks later than usual. The harvest took some time to gain momentum, with scattered rain events and the cooler season causing many delays in picking. We started hitting our vintage straps towards the end of March and into April, with harvest looking like it will definitely go into May.

Quality is variable, which is indicative of the season, however there are always some gems in the cellar worth discovering. I am very pleased with the quality of my Chardonnay this vintage, it has been a real highlight, while my earlier picked parcels of Shiraz are looking very strong, as well as one outstanding parcel of Muscat, picked just before the Easter rain event.

A blend of two parcels, from our family’s Sunday Creek vineyard (sandy soils on river gravel) and Great Western. Each parcel ripened at different times, and thus was handled separately in the winery. The first parcel from our Sunday Creek vineyard was fermented in an open vat, being hand plunged 3 times daily. It was pressed into brand new French oak puncheons to undergo malolactic fermentation. The Great Western fruit was crushed (with 10% run off) into a static fermenter for a cold soak of 2-3 days. It was fermented on skins for approximately 14 days at temperatures of 20-24°C, being pumped over twice daily, before being pressed into tank to undergo malolactic fermentation.

The individual components were matured as separate parcels for their barrel maturation in French oak hogsheads and puncheons. At the end of the 12 month maturation period, the wine was blended from the most preferred oak barrels, fined and clarified prior to bottling in September 2024.

Our 2023 Pfeiffer Merlot is a lovely cherry red colour. The nose is fragrant and enticing, with aromas of red currants, violets and toasty new oak. The palate is plush and generous, with delicious raspberry and cherry fruit flavours, and a long and textural finish.

Merlot is a versatile food wine and pairs well with deeply savoury flavours. Try it with Free Range Pork Chops, Portobello Mushrooms and a Merlot reduction sauce.
