Fruit Sourcing Rutherglen

Harvest Date February, March 2016

Vintage The 2016 growing season looked very promising, with good Winter and Spring rainfall until October.  November and December were dry and warm, leading to a relatively mild January.  Supplementary irrigation was required to maintain good soil moisture levels and canopy health.

The first week of February saw two inches of rain fall, which was just before the onset of harvest, so certainly created a few nerves at the beginning of vintage.

Fortunately the rest of the harvest remained dry, and all grape varieties came in very early, with picking starting on the 10th February.  Vintage progressed at a fast and furious pace, due to three very warm weeks of temperatures between 35-40C, with incredibly rapid ripening across all varieties.  Early blocks of Cabernet, Durif and Muscat were all harvested in February!

March saw the warm and dry conditions continue, along with the fast pace of the vintage.   All varieties were harvested by the end of the month, with the exception of Muscadelle for Topaque, which was picked in April.

Overall cropping levels were average and the quality of the vintage is good, with ripe and full flavours, with Muscadelle for Topaque the highlight.

Winemakers Comments The 2016 Pfeiffer Durif is sourced from two vineyards in Rutherglen.  Each vineyard was picked at different times and therefore handled separately in the winery.  Both parcels were given a cold maceration for 2 days prior to fermentation on skins at temperatures of 20-25°C for 8 days.  Pump overs occurred twice daily during fermentation, but only for short periods of time to avoid over extraction.  Towards the end of fermentation, one parcel was transferred into new American oak hogsheads and puncheons to finish fermentation, while the other parcels was left on skins post fermentation for 7 days to allow for further tannin polymerization and increase mouthfeel and depth of flavour.

The 2016 Pfeiffer Durif was matured in a combination of French and American oak of various size and age for approximately 18 months.  The wine was then blended, fined and clarified prior to bottling in late December 2017.

Our 2016 Durif has a deep, dark purple-red colour.  The nose abounds with ripe black berry and dark plum fruit flavours, enhanced by new oak characters.  The palate is big, bold and beautiful, with rich, ripe fruits and powerful tannins giving great length.
