James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2019 94/100 "Remarkable how different this is to the base 'Rutherglen' release. It's like moving over to a different flavour chart. This is malty, honeyed in a leather wood way, volatile, and as much green tea as black. Overall intensity kicks up a level too. Elegance takes a back seat to personality."

Peter Bourne, Food And Wine Match - Treacle Tart, Gourmet Traveller WINE Magazine, August/September 2012 Issue “A classic British dessert with a classic Australian fortified. For over 100 years the wine folk of Rutherglen have been fortifying a minor Bordeaux white grape variety, muscadelle, to create liqueur topaque – a lush, smooth and unctuous dessert wine. Treacle, sugar and fresh cream, ingredients that are natural partners for in this rich caramel and cold tea flavoured fortified while its earthy rancio complexity acts as a natural foil for the nutty oatmeal. A harmonious match.”
Ben Knight, Drop By Degrees, Melbourne Times Weekly, 11th July 2012 “Nothing really compares to the fortified wines of Rutherglen. I love most fortified styles, but our north-east Victorian producers have the magic touch. This is the Classic Topaque from Pfeiffer in Rutherglen. (Note that the packaging of the Rutherglen Topaque and the Classic Topaque are very similar). The colour has that lovely tawny brassy mahogany shine as it wobbles in the glass. The smell is enough to make you smile. It evokes memories of baking, richness and sweet things. But it is more complex than that. This classic topaque, with an average age of 10 years, rolls out the flavours. It has a nose of honey and burnt toffee, the texture of silk and sweetness, then a nutty character, toast and a final dried fig and more deep raisin flavours. If Australia stopped making every wine except Rutherglen fortified, we would still be world beaters.”

Alex Berry, Winemaker Jen Follows In Father's Footsteps, Weekend News, 8th June 2011 “With the average age of 10 years but with some older material of 50 years old skilfully blended, this Topaque is overloaded with outstanding medals and Trophy’s that would make our Australian Swimming team blush with envy. The bouquet is exquisitely complex and aromatic. It’s luscious and rolls over the tongue with intense honey and malty butterscotch flavours lingering for what seems like and eternity after you’ve swallowed it. Versatile to share with chocolate by the fire or with your best friend.”

Tim White, The Australian Financial Review, August 2005 97/100 “Smells of cold tea, reduced berries, figs and dates, and preserved citrus. Excellent texture on the palate: rich and tongue-coating but with vitality. There’s treacle, toffee, glace figs and it finishes with caramel smoky mouth-aromas. Divine.”
US Wine and Spirit Magazine, Winter 2004 100 BEST WINES in the world
US Wine and Spirit Magazine, January/February 2004 94/100 “Brilliant spice infuses this complex, sumptuous wine. Between its dark date and long, nut-scented flavors, this is a knock out. As the flavors trail off, it ends completely clean, balanced for an almond tart or savory desserts made from macadamia nuts.”
Donna Hay Magazine, Fall 2004 “This wine’s thick texture leads to some toasted flavours that balance its weight. A glass in front of an open fire with a bowl of cashews and spiced ginger seems totally appropriate.”

Winemakers Comments |
Each year Rutherglen Topaque grapes are harvested at high sugar levels. This wine is then transferred into barrels and casks of different volumes for several years (anything between 5 and 50 years). These parcels of varying ages are then blended together prior to bottling to create the perfect balanced wine, for drinking now. Our Classic Rutherglen Topaque contains classic aromas of honey and malt. The palate is wonderfully rich and slides across the tongue, lingering long after the final sip. |
