Classification Seriously Pink Apera

What Is An Apera? An Australian apera is an invitation to adventure!

An apera can be enjoyed as the sun goes down and it is the ideal way to ‘open up’ the appetite in preparation for a meal. It is the perfect pre-dinner drink to share over a light bite, in the company of friends and sometimes can last longer than dinner itself! An apera can be elegant and dry or fruity and fragrant. An apera can even be muddled together with other liqueurs and syrups to be enjoyed as a seriously good wine cocktail. The most enjoyable moment is simply deciding when it is apera o’clock.

Grapes A blend including Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Shiraz and Gewürztraminer

Vintage NV

Seal A screw cap has been used on our Seriously Pink to maximise it's flavour and freshness, and to eliminate the chances of cork taint.

88/100 "Vivid pink; isn't, of course, intended to be taken seriously, but be cautious about swigging it down without paying attention to its alcohol. It is actually well balanced."

Jeni Port, The Summer Wine Cocktail, http://thehoopla.com.au, 8th November 2011
“I want to take one of the great wines of Australia – the fortified muscat – a wine that can only be produced by a few makers who have been patiently stashing away stocks decade after decade and I want to turn it into a summer ice. I want to free our wines of the archaic rituals that bind them. I want to add ice to my chardie! It’s not what you normally do with wine, at least not in this country, but it’s time to relax some of those highbrow attitudes. It’s time to embrace the wine cocktail! The idea took root a couple of years ago when young Gen Y Rutherglen winemaker Jen Pfeiffer (left) released her Seriously Pink rose fortified (formerly known as port). She had made her first rose port while working in Portugal in 2007 at the Croft Winery and when she returned home she decided to give the style a go. Indelibly fragrant with a whiff of something spicy, like cinnamon and something quite floral, like roses, it kicks right off the tongue spirity and warm. Jen suggests adding cranberry or pomegranate juice for a Seriously Pink cocktail.”

"Not for the beginner"

Liquor Watch, November/December 2009 Edition
"Jen Pfeiffer's Pink creation is back for another vintage. Seriously Pink is the very first rose liqueur wine that Pfeiffer created as an easy to drink, aperitif style wine. The 2009 vintage was tweaked for some improvements and volume has been quadrupled to meet the expected demand. It has a fragrant fruit nose with hints of berry and a floral lift. Don’t be afraid to mix it with soda water, tonic water or cranberry juice. Its seriously fun."

Max Allen, Gourmet Traveller, Top Drops of the Month, June 2009
“Inspired by vintage experience making pink port in Portugal, Jen Pfeiffer has created a beauty at her family’s Victorian winery.  It’s a glowing rosé, full of floral strawberries and soft sweetness.”

Product Watch, Liquor Watch, March 2009
“Seriously Pink is a Rosé Liqueur that has a vibrant pink colour. It has a clean, refreshing palate and summer berry flavours. It should be served icy cold and is a great aperitif on a summer night. Winemaker, Jen Pfeiffer has taken from her experience in Douro at the Croft Winery where she was responsible for white port and Croft pink. Her time over there inspired the new release, which nicely combines the traditions of Duoro and Rutherglen.”

Winemakers Comments The Pfeiffer Seriously Pink is a fresh, fruity, fragrant, fun seriously pink apera.  It is a wine to be enjoyed as an aperitif or on a lazy afternoon.  The fruit sings from the glass, while the influence from the spirit is there in the background adding a touch of complexity.

Wine Cocktails using Pfeiffer Seriously Pink

Cellar It is not necessary to cellar this wine.  Simply enjoy.

Technical Notes The red grapes for the Seriously Pink were co-fermented on skins for 3 days before pressing into stainless steel tanks, for further fermentation.  The Gewürztraminer was fermented in a stainless steel tank.  In both cases, fermentation was stopped using an aromatic brandy spirit, leaving a sweet wine of 16% v/v.

The wine was blended, cold stabilised, fined and clarified before bottling, to lock in the freshness and fruitfulness of the wine.  The colour is pink, or should I say seriously pink – vibrant and bright and very inviting.  The nose is fragrant and fruity, with summer berries and a floral lift.  The palate is clean and refreshing, and like last year, does not pack too great a punch, only fortified to 16% v/v.
