Right throughout the year there are great festivals and events for you to enjoy in and around one of Australia’s most loved wine regions: Rutherglen.

 

Celebrate the bounty of regional harvests at iconic festivals like Tastes of Rutherglen and the High Country Harvest or enjoy premier musical events like the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and the magnificent Opera in the Alps in Beechworth.  

 

In the cooler months join in on the fun of Rutherglen Winery Walkabout…and as the weather turns warmer blow the dust off your bicycle, pump up those tyres, and get yourself out to explore our majestic wine region in conjunction with the Tour de Rutherglen.

Summer

Opera In The Alps

January

Staged in the picturesque grounds of La Trobe at Beechworth, Opera in the Alps has become firmly established as one of regional Victoria’s cultural highlights since its inception in 1996. Audience members can expect an evening of sensory delights as they enjoy favourites from opera and theatre under the stars.

 

Corowa National Federation Festival

January

On January 1, 1901 the Commonwealth of Australia was proclaimed. This event was based on proposals put forth at a conference held in Corowa in 1893. Corowa proudly claims the title of the “Birthplace of Federation”.

 

This festival is a celebration of Corowa’s role in the Federation of Australia. The three day festival includes markets, sideshows and rides, live music, a Hot Rod Show ‘n’ Shine, vintage tractor pull, BBQ and food stalls, a Grand Parade on the Sunday morning and fireworks on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Tastes of Rutherglen

March - Victorian Labour Day Long Weekend

Every March, Rutherglen comes alive to celebrate Tastes of Rutherglen, a tantalising showcase of the regions finest culinary masters and their delicious local regional produce, perfectly matched with some world class wines.

 

Leading chefs and winemakers are on hand presenting these fabulous experiences in a regional culinary event that should not to be missed.

 

Transport options are easy, thanks to the TAC Winery Shuttle Bus which circles between all participating wineries and is available each day with pick up and drop-off in Rutherglen, Wahgunyah and Corowa, Albury Wodonga, Howlong, Mulwala, Bundalong, Chiltern, Wangaratta and Yarrawonga.

 

High Country Harvest

May

Feast and forage around Victoria’s bountiful High Country over 10 delectable days in May at the region-wide High Country Harvest – a festival for lovers of food, wine and beer.

Winter

Rutherglen Winery Walkabout

June - Queens Birthday Long Weekend

From it's beginnings in 1974 when the Winemakers of Rutherglen joined forces to promote their quality wines, the Winery Walkabout festival has grown in size and stature.   Now Australia’s longest running festival the Rutherglen Winery Walkabout attracts over 20,000 visitors and boasts three Tourism Awards including "Best Festival in Victoria" and "Best Festival in Australia".

Spring

Rutherglen Wine Show

September

The Rutherglen Wine Show has been running for over 120 years and is recognised by wine producers and wine consumers as one of the major wine shows in Australia. With well over 2000 entries across red and white table wine and sparkling and fortified wine categories, this is a major event on the Australian wine calendar.

 

The judging process is carried out over 6 days and every wine is assessed for gold, silver or bronze medals according to a strict set of judging criteria.  Following the judging, the public have an opportunity to taste the award winning wines at the public tasting on the Friday evening of the show. Tickets for this event are much sought after so pre-purchase of tickets is essential.

October - NSW Long Weekend

Cycle through the majestic old vineyards and wineries of Rutherglen and indulge your wine passion as you go. Whether you’re a lycra clad mad keen cyclist or only dust off your two wheels once a year, the Tour de Rutherglen is a magnificent way to explore the Rutherglen Wine Region.

 

The Wangaratta Jazz Festival

The Weekend prior to the running of the Melbourne Cup
Australia’s premier jazz festival features over 80 events at various venues throughout Wangaratta and surrounds, ranging from the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre, through to the magnificent Wangaratta Cathedral as well as wineries in nearby Milawa, Oxley and Taminick.
